Dear Friend--an update on our 3-year-long global solidarity for our children lost in the Sewol ferry disaster. The Sewol ferry that “sank under the weight of the collusion between the neoliberal state that sheds its responsibility to safeguard people’s lives to private entities and the private entity that trades customers’ safety for profits” (Prof. J.J. Suh) emerged from the water 3 years after sinking. While we are saddened by the human made-disaster under a deregulated State, crony and corrupt capitalism and neoliberal economy, we cherish the stories of heroic irregular workers and teachers who sacrificed their lives to save children, the union member and metal worker who led more than 60 days of hunger strike for his daughter, and you--our global family members, progressive Korean media, sns, and international media who have shown enormous sympathy and respect for the beloved children we lost (please see our previous messages). http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-39361944 (2017/3/23)

April 16, 2016 was the anniversary of the Sewol ferry tragedy. This year’s remembering of the children of Sewol differed significantly from last year’s due in part to the spectacular victory of the opposition parties in the National Assembly elections. As you know, for the first time in 16 years, opposition parties will be in majority.

In the pouring rain, more than 12,000 citizens participated in the anniversary ceremony held in Seoul peacefully. There was no police intervention. We can cautiously say: the sad and tragic memories can be slowly replaced by another realities--sympathy and hope. Koreans truly appreciate the global citizen’s sustained solidarity for the victims of the Sewol ferry tragedy (see our previous updates).

Jae-Jung Suh "The Sewol sank under the weight of the collusion between the neoliberal state that sheds its responsibility to safeguard people’s lives to private entities and the private entity that trades customers’ safety for profits. The accident serves as a vivid reminder of what tragic consequences can result from government-business collusion. While collusion had existed under previous authoritarian regimes that sometimes sacrificed people’s safety for profits, the Sewol incident reveals that the nature of the collusion shifted to give more power to business interests. The authoritarian developmental state shed some of its power as part of the IMF-imposed structural adjustment after the 1997 financial crisis. As the government transferred some of its power to plan, manage, and oversee the economy to private entities, its relative power gradually declined. By the time of the Sewol disaster, the government took a hands-off approach to overseeing such “private” entities as the KRS. "Right-wing civic groups have accused the victims’ families of milking the spotlight and trying to use the sinking as a pretext to wrest compensation from the government....In the meantime, filmmaker Kim Dong-bin timed the release of his documentary “Upside Down” to coincide with the sinking’s second anniversary. The film tells the story of four high school students who died in the sinking, through interviews with their fathers.Kim said he was motivated to make the film in part by how the Sewol has become a divisive subject in South Korea. “There is this negative stigma surrounding the Sewol.
