유엔본부 이례적 조기 게양..가자지구 희생 유엔직원 11명 추모

유엔이 조기(弔旗)를 게양(揭揚)했다.

뉴욕 유엔본부에 게양된 깃발이 이례적으로 조기로 게양돼 시선을 끌었다. 유엔은 7일 최근 가자지구의 충돌로 숨진 11명의 유엔 직원들을 추모하고 가족 친지들과 연대하는 뜻에서 본부 건물의 유엔기를 조기로 게양했다고 밝혔다.

이날 유엔 직원들은 가자 지구 희생자들과 세계 여러 지역의 전쟁으로 숨진 희생자들을 애도하는 1분간의 묵념(黙念)을 하기도 했다.

이에 앞서 6일엔 가자지구의 유엔팔레스타인난민기구(UNRWA)를 비롯, 시리아와 다른 지역에 있는 유엔 기구와 시설물에서도 일제히 조기가 게양된 바 있다.
 
 
 

UNRWA의 피에르 크라엔뷜 대표는 이날 유엔본부의 조기 게양식에 앞서 “희생된 이들의 헌신과 많은 분들의 애도표명에 감사를 드린다”고 말했다.

반기문 사무총장도 희생된 유엔 직원들이 보여준 용기에 감사를 표한 후 유엔 시설물에 대한 공격은 국제법을 위반한 것으로 진상이 신속하게 규명되야 할 것이라고 강조했다.
 
 
 


지난 24일 가자지구에선 이스라엘의 포격으로 유엔학교 직원 11명 등 15명이 사망한 바 있다. 가자지구 사태이후 현재까지 이 지역 10개 학교중 3곳이 포격을 당한 가운데 약 27만명의 피난민이 발생한 것으로 집계됐다. UNRWA 학교 등 유엔 시설물은 난민들을 위한 임시 피난처로 활용되고 있다.

반기문총장이 임명한 로버트 세리 중동특사는 현재 이집트 카이로에서 가자지구 휴전연장을 놓고 진행중인 이스라엘과 팔레스타인 대표간의 협상을 돕고 있다.

UN flags at half-mast to honour staff killed in Gaza conflict

The United Nations flag is flying at half-mast today at the world body's New York Headquarters in memory of the UN staff members killed since the beginning of the conflict in Gaza on 8 July, and in solidarity with the families and friends of those injured.



In Gaza, flags at the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) fields and installations were lowered yesterday in honour of the 11 UNRWA colleagues killed in shellings in Gaza, as well as in Syria and other field operations.



“We are honoured and touched by the many expressions of sympathy and actions of support we have witnessed,” said UNRWA Commissioner General, Pierre Krähenbühl, during an informal briefing to the General Assembly in New York.

 
 
 



Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who participated in the meeting, thanked the staff for their bravery and stressed that attacks against UN premises, along with other suspected breaches of international law, must be swiftly investigated.



UNRWA schools and other buildings have been used as temporary shelters for the nearly 270,000 displaced people throughout the Gaza Strip. On 3 August, a third school in 10 days was hit.



Mr. Ban's Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Robert Serry, is currently in Cairo where Egyptian mediators are planning to shuttle between the Israeli and Palestinian representatives to negotiate longer-term ceasefire to the ongoing 72-hour truce.



Meanwhile, today in New York, staff will take part in a minute of silence to express solidarity with the families and friends colleagues killed in Gaza and in other conflicts around the world.
