Be Caught in a Snowstorm on the Top of a Mountain

I never imagined there would be a motel in the U.S, where mice roamed under the bed, although I was always looking for a cheap motel. I was frightened to find a mouse while I was lying on the bed after taking a shower, but I couldn't go out to find another motel with this tired body. I'm falling asleep with my tired body, but something keeps biting me itchy. Thinking it is like a rat fleck, I kept scratching and fell asleep, for I can't help because I was so tired.

I've made all the arrangements to head out for a casino in the Indian reservation of Twin Arrow in the morning and the weather forecast says there will be a snowstorm tomorrow. No matter how much I thought about it, I thought it would be better to stay here, where there are many markets, restaurants and, most of all, cheaper accommodation than being stuck in a snowstorm in the middle of the desert, so I unpacked my luggages. It was so different from the morning I met in the desert just a few days ago. I

I ate breakfast with the simple food I had bought yesterday and lay down again. Although there was a mouse living under the bed, I couldn't help it. It was itchy from the bites, but not too much. I didn't think it would be solved by telling the owner. Sleeping with a mouse for a few nights would be a special memory that I have never experienced before. After a good sleep, it was over two o'clock. With a sourly shabby face, I went out to find a restaurant to eat lunch.

I slept one more night and woke up in the morning, and it was snowing heavily. Looking at the weather forecast again, it will snow until 2 a.m. tomorrow. The day after tomorrow, the snow will stop, but the weather is so cold that the road will be iced, then I can not drag my wheelbarrow down a slippery slope, because it has no brake. I was at a loss what to do. I worried with anxiety that I might be stranded here for more than a week. I couldn't afford to take a week off, if not a day or two. All I can do is to adapt, follow and overcome my anxiety. There is nothing I can choose from, even if there are mice and rat fleas. It's lucky not to have met such a heavy snow in the middle of the road. I gave up everything and took a good nap. The more I sleep, the more I want to sleep. I woke up after a long sleep and opened the door, and the snow was melting a lot. I ran for a few kilometers to check the condition of the highway's shoulder, and I thought it would be fine after sunrise tomorrow morning, unless there was a major change in the morning.

The weather was as good as a slap on my cheek when I wanted to cry. Fatigue accumulated while crossing the desert and nutrition was not good, so I could rest for a day or two, relieve the accumulated fatigue, and supplement the nutrition. Rather than care about the setback or standstill in the plan by blaming the weather, I am even grateful to think that Mother Nature's Spirit gave me a wonderful gift to relieve my fatigue.

Now I can see why people around me were so surprised when the ordinary man like me, who was not trained as an adventurer or explorer, suddenly began to enjoy the marathon at more than 50, and declared that he was going to traverse the U.S. Continental Marathon alone without the help of any others. Contrary to my determined will to overcome my own limitations, I desperately feel how weak a human being is before the inevitable power of Mother Nature. I have now learned that unless the Mother Nature spirits all join forces to help me, my adventure is likely to end up in vain as a child's prank. Now, at the moment I felt relieved that I had gone through the Mojave Desert and climbed the top of the Rocky Mountains, Mother Nature showed me something.

There is no land on this earth that is no longer accessible to humans. But there are many things that others have not done. The challenge and exploration is to dream and imagine what others have not done, and to jump at any risk and pain. Even the most state-of-the-art explorers with full and latest equipment on the Arctic expedition will not be able to relax for a moment in the face of the immense power of Mother Nature. Just as the North Pole does not open the door of mystery to anyone, the Trans-American Marathon will not allow anyone to complete the race. That's why people are enthusiastic and applauding those who challenge and explore at the risk of danger and hardship.

When I woke up in the morning, it wasn't a big change, but it happened. It's freezing with about a centimeter more snow all night. In addition, it is forecasted to snow a little more from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. I had to worry a lot. 'Do I stay here for another day or continue my march at the some risks ?' After scrutinizing the surface of the road, I decided to take some risks. It was not a life-risking trip, but it was not a leisurely trip that had to avoid even a few risks. After drinking a cup of coffee at the hamburger store, I waited for the sun to melt the road a little before leaving at about nine o'clock. After an hour of running, the snowflakes began to fly again. At first, they flew a little bit, and then they got bigger and the wind started blowing hard. Snowflakes fly fast, cars run fast, and I run fast for I took two days off. Since the distance to run today is about 35 kilometers, which is less than usual, so the burden was less, but I was anxious if the snow would pile up and the road would freeze again.

I decided to run and I started. Fortunately, the snow did not pile up and the road began to melt, but the tube ran out of air again. So blowing my hands in the snowstorm, I had the trouble of changing the tube. I thought of a scene of Doctor Zhivago who was struggling in the snow. I fought in the snow for about three and a half hours, but I think it's the first time I've ever run a little slope that's good to run all day. I took two days off and strengthened my stamina. So I could enjoy speeding up my run. I came into the hotel at a relatively early hour. My steps running on the Bitdulunggil or 'lightpath-MK were full of robustness that I had never felt before. Nothing seemed to stop my road to run any longer, but I was worshiping the humble word of conformity and adaptation.

It's been only half a day, but it's a desert again. In the middle of the desert stood only a casino hotel. I pushed a snow-soaked cart into the hotel lobby. The persons, whose eyes were bloodshot to catch good luck that could never be caught in front of the slot machine, were mostly Indians. It was a skillful idea how the U.S. government thought of building casinos for the stable income of the Indians. How come did they give these spiritual people the most corrupt business of capitalism! Seeing me, the manager came up to the desk from there and asked me a few questions. He told me that he had seen me on the highway as he came to work earlier, and he announced, "You guys, we have a VIP in our hotel." Then someone brings me a buffet ticket, takes a photo with me, and gives me a paper and a pen to sign. As many people flock to the area in an instant and take pictures with me in turn and I sign autographs for them. I feel like I've become a Hallyu or Korean pop star. I've signed the document before, but it's the first time I've signed it like a star.

Yesterday and the day before yesterday the mouse came out in the hotel, so it was like a room at the entrance to hell, literally staying overnight before going to hell. When I wake up in the morning after sleeping there, I should go into hell. However, I was called early in the morning because it was a clerical error of the Jade Emperor, and now I feel like I¡¯m back at the entrance to heaven and sleeping a night here. Tomorrow, I will enter heaven.

The ecstasy that came after dinner at the buffet was great. It was rewarding to have taken a little risk of wading through the snow. Entering the five-star hotel room, it was so different, even though it was different as if I had suddenly come into a snowy mountain covered with coniferous trees from the desert. The weather cleared up in the afternoon. Looking over the hotel window at the glorious beauty of dusk falling over the snow-covered coniferous forest of the Rocky Mountains, I recalled the journey that I had passed. I made myself clear that I was not a coward. I slept a very sound sleep that night. I was afraid that I might have carried the rat fleas, but fortunately I was no longer bitten by any insects. I went to the desk to check out in the morning and the balance says 'zero'. Again I was heading for the center of the vast desert that stretched from Arizona to New Mexico.
