I have now passed Amboy and passed Essex and arrived at Goffs. Today too, Mr. Richards comes to me in the middle of the run and hands me water and sandwiches. He bought me the bicycle tube and painkillers I had sked for. I owe him so much, so I tried to pay, but he won¡¯t receive the money for the tube and the painkillers. Instead, he taps on my shoulder saying, ¡° Please complete the race.¡± Plants in the desert have a lot of thorns, so the cart tube pops up so often. It is very hard to change the tubes and put the air in the middle of the desert. Today is the day to say goodbye to Mr. Richards. It's also the day to get out of the notorious Mojave Desert section of California. But from now on, I have to get through the desert without the help of Richard, who is like the savior to me. Although I knew him only a few days ago, he helped me with a warm heart, as if he were helping an old friend in difficulties.

He hugged me hard and said, "Good luck! I'm sure you'll complete the race," I replied, "Thank you so much for your kindness. I wasn't confident at first, but now I'm confident because you helped me and gave me strength. I'll make sure to get in touch with you after I would finish the race." And I really found tears shedding n his eyes and my eyes. He seems to have asked the DMV staff to help me when they would meet me, telling them what I looked like after he broke up with me. The traffic officers I met on the road called me "Richard's proud friend." "You're Richard's friend?" they said, "You're doing something great I never thought of," They gave meu a thumbs-up, waters and telling me the way to go. Of course, They did not forget words of encouragement.

There is a gas station where Freeway 40 and Road 66 meet. Trailer trucks running across the continent are resting at that gas stations. I ordered a double quarter pound hamburger there, but it didn't fill me up, so I ordered one more. The first week I didn't get used to it, so I didn't have any appetite, but now I eat more so the food I prepared is not enough. It has been a long time since rice and kimchi were already eaten all. When I asked if it was okay to set up a tent around here, they asked me to pay ten dollars. Rather than sleeping in the middle of the desert, it was better to sleep here because there was a shower facility which truck drivers can rest and take a shower.

It is about 88 kilometers from Goff to Laughlin. If I cut it twice, it will be a little difficult, but it will take only two days to get there. According to Choi Sung-kwon, Rafflin in the middle of the desert is a casino city, so hotel charges and buffets are very cheap and wonderful. While supplementing nutrition there, I thought I would rest a day there and plan the next schedule of a 290-kilometer distance to my next goal, Flag Staff.

After driving on Route 66 and entering Route 95 again, the side road was a sandy one. There was no way a cart would roll over in the sand. Now, I have no way back. I have no choice but to go forward. The speed of cars encountered on these roads can only be a huge threat to me. I ran a 30-kilometer road till I met Route 163, fighting with these speedy cars. The road is better as I cross the Nevada border while running with tension over possible accidents if I am not very careful at any time. I finally passed California. I ran through a California road about 500 kilometers.

I put some money, ID cards, credit cards, and emergency phone numbers in my waist bag and hung it on the handle of my cart. It is to make it easier to use. When I entered the store, I would put my cell phone in there and wear it on my waist. Other than the money, I put back in a plastic bag and put in it there. It is to prevent from getting wet in rain or any water. But the bag was not zipped, and as the truck swung past, the money and everything in it was blown away by the strong wind. Sweats spread all over my body. I stopped, left cart and ran back to find the things that had flown. Fortunately, identification cards and credit cards in plastic bags did not fly far. But the money could not be picked up again. I had to calm down my surprised heart. I almost lost everything by mistake for a moment. Without ID card, I can't sleep at a motel, and without a credit card, this trip was not even possible. The money was kept in pieces just in case like this. The lost money was very small that it hurt me a little bit. It made me feel rather comfortable to think that the lost little money was my burnt offering to the Mother Nature. I prayed that the money would fly to nature and bring me good luck.

The road to Laughlin was a rough mountain of sand. The solitary beauty of the rough sand mountains makes me ask and answer many questions to myself. I thought I had passed the mountain ridge and valley countless times, but I still can't see the down road. The cliff of the sand mountain, which was sometimes seen down, was followed by dangerously high cliffs. If I let my guard down again, I will lose my body, not a little money. It was like the background of a movie called The Escape of the Planet of the Apes starring Charlton Heston. I felt like a lost child of space falling off the Planet of the Aps. While I go across the desolate sand mountains, I have a strange feeling of sailing on a boat through the sea where rocks are hidden everywhere. The moment I make a small mistake, the ship will fall to pieces at any time.

I made a paper airplane and flew it off from the cliff during a short break. On thousands-meter cliff, the paper plane flew well down there, curving several times. When I finally reached the top of the sand mountain, motor-bikers enjoying the pleasure of running through the desert sand mountains, wearing cosmonaut-like helmets and colorful costumes, saw me from afar, and came up to me, smoking sand dust and offering words of encouragement. Clouds of dust rose here and there in the sand, not only with the motor-bikers but also with people driving mountain cars.

After a hard climb up the mountain, I can see the city down there. It's hard to go downhill, too. I arrived at Laughlin on Valentine's Day on February 14, just two weeks later. Laughlin is in the southernmost part of Nevada State and the Colorado River flows through the middle of the city. It is a resort and a casino city as well. If I cross the river, then it's Arizona State. The light from outside the casino hotel was dazzling. It's a bright and dazzling light that seems to tempt anything in the world. It was also like an outpouring of the people¡¯s desire to win the money. The surface of the Colorado River, which receives the light, look as gloomy as the face of the gambler's wife. How cold the river is that flows through the desert without wetting it!

When I arrived at Laughlin, darkness deepened. Entering the casino, I found the buffet first. The biggest pain in the world seems to be hunger. There may be bone-eating cold, nakedness, and murderous heat that is likely to melt flesh, but now it is so. I had to deal with the biggest pain first. It was like a maze in the casino, too, like a road in the desert. When I asked where the buffet is to a woman pulling the steering wheel with her eyes bloodshot in front of the slot machine, she points that way and takes the buffet ticket out of the handbag and hands it to me. I'm going to turn around saying thank her, but she asks for ten dollars. She kindly teaches me that you will earn five dollars, because it is fifteen dollars. I intended to say, ¡°you got ten dollars because you got it for free as a promotion of the hotel, but I turned around saying nothing and just giving ten dollars. Because I was surprised about myself at the moment. Since I¡¯ve been receiving warm sympathy from people, I knew that she was giving it to me.

First of all, entering the cheap and plentiful casino buffet, I began to eat meat voraciously that I had never tasted in the desert without being conscious of other people's eyes. I spared no pains to move many times with my tired body. I enjoyed fully the wonderful taste of the food being minced in my mouth along the throat into the stomach. Just as a phone, which was changed its button to vibrating, vibrates when it receives a call, as the protein was digested at the stomach, satiation sent signals of vibrating to my whole body and even tiredness disappeared all.

Now that I had filled my stomach, I had to find a hotel to sleep.

I thought it was cheap because it was casino area, but it was really expensive because of the weekend and Valentine's Day. I found some hotels that was relatively not so expensive with tired body, but there was no room, so I was in vain. Thinking it was of no use to try to find a reasonable hotel any more, I went out to the cool Colorado River and looked at the floating boat for a long time. At that time I heard from my cousin in New York that my room was booked. I'm running alone now but I'm never alone. Many people help and cheer me both spiritually and materially

It seemed ridiculous to me that many people who wished for luck sat in front of the money-eating monster slot machine, feeding their money continuously with serious looks on their faces, hoping that the monster would vomit. The problem seems to be not that people don't always live hard, but that they don't get in the right direction and work hard. War and debate on idea are not problems because people are lazy, but because they are too passionate. I think it would rather be better to be lazy than enthusiastic without knowing the direction. That monster is so much wiser than humans that it sometimes vomits money so that people won't give up. Casinos are illegitimate children created by people's desires and commercial tricks.

I slept in a rough place in the desert and entered a hotel room. It was like a residence of the emperor to me. First, I got water in the bathtub. The sound of the water spilling from the faucet is pleasant. All clothes that covered my body were armless running shirts and running pants like swimsuits. It didn't take a long time to get undressed. I was shocked at myself that was reflected in the mirror after I threw off my clothes. I¡¯ve become a monster. The black monster was covered with dust, and the sweaty head became very shabby. I asked the monster in the mirror. "What the hell are you doing here?" The monster's eyes twinkle more than any other gem. "I'm preparing for the best of my life, agonizing, sighing and struggling like this! Do you know what I am like?" A 57-year-old man was screaming at a 59-year-old man in Korean age.

I enjoy a bath in hot water after a long time. As I immerse myself in hot water, I feel relaxed and fresh all over my body. Soaking it in water for a long time, I soaked dust and swarms and soap to wash it out. I never thought cleaning my body would be such a blessing before.

Da Vinci pecked out the useless part of the stone and became a great sculptor. If we peck out the useless parts of a stone, it can be a stone Buddha or a statue of the Virgin Mary. Doctors remove useless tumors in the body. I, who washed myself cleanly and reflected in the mirror, was really a piece of sculpture that without any excrescence. The essence of running, carving, and healing is to get rid of the unnecessary parts. The beard was so long and shabby, but the expression was as clear, clean and radiant as ever. I became a beautiful body by taking off all the fat from my body in two weeks while I was running.

Now my body was the image of a wild puma that could survive endless running in the nature. The muscles under my skin fluttered like rivers. I was filled with confidence that I had become stronger than ever. Even at the age of 59, having such a beautiful body was a profitable business that I could think of. It's just a jackpot popping up. I don't know how precious it is to have a body that is full of vitality, instead of a sick and life-weary body. I said to myself in the mirror, "Good job. I'm proud of you. I love you!"

Marathon is basically a pain. But pain isn't everything. People are crazy about marathons because they have tasted the best joys diluted in that pain. My transcontinental marathon is basically a series of pain. But the flower of hope blooming in pain, the unforgettable jubilation that comes after pain, I went out of my way to experience them. In life, there is no other choice but to have dirt on the body and on the mind, and even holy nature has dirt, too. The cleaner and neater people pretend to be, the more often they wash. Sometimes we have to wash our mind. Traveling is like a bathtub that cleanses our mind. To pretend to be clean, I set out in order to wash off my mind's dirt.
