In 2010, I co-founded the Young Asian American Leaders for the Future, a committee that aims to raise awareness of current events or issues that affect minorities in the NY/NJ area, open communication with higher officials about these issues, and encourage its members to enter public service and law enforcement professions.

The United States Asian American Law Enforcement Foundation (USAALEF) acted as the mother organization of the Young Asian American Leaders for the Future program to encourage young members of the Asian American community to aspire to enter public service and law enforcement professions. I have been involved with this organization for three years. The first year dealt with researching solutions to reducing the NJ budget deficit. In the second year, we organized a law enforcement panel discussion in May 2011, which included law enforcement agencies at all levels: federal, state, and local, as well as assisting the FBI CREST Program.

This year¡¯s program involved a comprehensive research of public policy and government careers with purpose to prepare a rational proposal and understanding for the Asian and minority community. As the captain of the six-member group, I led the participants in defining what obstacles the minorities faced in applying for public policy and government careers in today's society.

After thoroughly conducting research on the determined problems, we attended and participated in various events including with the United Nations U.N. Development and Human Rights for all Divisions, U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). During these events, we were able to observe what each organization did or were planning to do regarding employment from Asian and minorities community, and were also able to ask questions on the behalf of the Asian and minorities community on their approach to offering these government careers. At the end, we composed a comprehensive research paper in which we discussed any issues we found in public policy and government careers as they applied to the minority community.

Our main goal was to serve as a communication bridge between the Asian and minority communities and the American society at large. What we all had in common was our passion for improving the Asian and minority community. By establishing a firm bridge between the Asian and minority community to the rest of the American society, we hoped to increase collaboration between the two groups and better the society as a whole.

My personal goal this year was to become an effective leader of a group of five members. As the captain of the group, I needed to have strong leadership and commitment to the organization. It meant that I needed to have responsibility for the whole group and the project, and in order to do so, I would need to gain the respect and trust of all of the members of the organization. This did not prove to be a difficult task, as each and every member were willing to undertake new challenges and become proactive in all of our planned endeavors.

After each visit to an organization, we held a meeting in which we discussed our individual findings on minorities' limited access to certain positions in the public policy or government field. During this meeting, it was important that all of us hear each other out on our opinions on what we thought were the reasons for lack of opportunities for minorities despite each organization's claim that they do the best in creating diversity within their surroundings.

More importantly, we had to come to a consensus on proposing rational solutions to this problem and offered our thoughts and opinions on what would be the most practical approach to increase minority group's access to employment opportunities in federal agencies. Although at times it was kind of challenging to agree on certain ideas and proposals, this collaboration was a success overall. In the end, we were able to compose a final report that thoroughly addressed each issue we found to be relevant to the main topic of limited access of government related jobs.
